Balance is everything

If you really want to improve and to reach that top level in skiing, improving your balance is a key element as important as any other part.

Think about the sole of the foot as having three points, the ball of the foot (behind your toes) make up  two points and the heal at the back of your foot makes up the third. A bit like a tripod! two feet make six points right. When you are next out and about or even just stand up now and feel for the six points. Having your centre of mass balanced over the six points is optimal. you might challenge this a fair bit when you ski but as long as you know where centre is, you can develop the ability to return to this centre position.

try skiing with your boots undone to help you find your six points and your centre of balance.

whilst skiing try anything to challenge your balance, jump, shuffle your feet, step, run its all helpful and pushes you to develop your balance.

POWDER TURNS MADE EASY

Skiing is all about riding a platform, on the piste it’s our edges that bite into the snow therefore making a platform to ride around the turn. In powder we have to make our own platform. We do this by being very active with our pressure control, making small and quick adjustments with our legs(like shock absorbers). We can build our own platform by pressing down into the snow, once we develop a feel for this. We can also feel for how solid the platform is and how much force we can then use.  When there is enough of a platform we can use this to pop us into the next turn. With practice you can develop the ability to really play with this, riding your own platform. Thats really the secret to powderskiing.
